Context
The standard weight of these pieces was 24 to the pound avoirdupois (2/3 ounce or 291.7 grains each). There are reports suggesting that the 1827 mintage was shipped to Tasmania, Australia, possibly via the British West Indies, and a large percentage was lost or damaged, making the year type a scarce issue but these reports seem little more than conjecture, with no evidential data.
