Context
© The Heberden Coin Room, Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford The King wears distinctly different garb in the 1539 dated version of the coin. The most notable difference is the inclusion of a heraldic collar. The ducat is also known as a 'Bonnet Piece'. The 1539 version of this coin is the first dated Scottish coin and the earliest coin struck in the British Isles that bears a date. A document from 1596 states that these coins were struck to a fineness of 22 carats (.916), as opposed to the 23 carats (.958) stated in another document recounting their issue.
