Context
After hundreds of years of the invariable sun (with three basic forms) and six-armed symbol (in over a hundred variations) as two of five pictograms from Series I karshapana on, this extraordinary coin abandons the familiar schema, introducing three human figure punches, initially separate punches as in the coin types 584—587, and later combined into one punch in types 588—592. These late imperial coins are of considerably lower weight than the longstanding 3.4 grams (this coin at 2.89 grams). The smaller flan of these later coins also means the punchmarks themselves, crowded and thus partly off flan on most coins from Series II on, are even more off-flan relative to the rest of Magadha-Mauryan era karshapana.
