The first year of this calendar is 639AD when the buddihst patriarch Buppasoranhan seized the royal throne of Sri Ksetra (present-day Myanmar). From 1889, Rama V instituted the solar calendar based on the Rattanakosin Era beginning on 1782AD with the accession of Rama I, the founder of the Chakri dynasty. The beginning date of the calendar was later changed by Rama VI to the passing of the Buddha Gautama in 543BC.
