Context
These tokens were issued in 8 denominations for settlers of the Matanuska Colony Project, a group of 202 midwestern families who relocated to Alaska in 1935 as part of a New Deal program. The Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation (ARRC) provided 30 dollars of “bingles” for each adult and 5 dollars for each child. Most of the original mintage was melted down following the colony's switch to U.S. coinage in 1937. A commemorative set was released in 1985, struck from the newly discovered original dies.
