Context
Not recorded in most catalogues, but similar issues can be found here: A1, N. Rhodes (ed. W. Bertsch), "The Coinage of Samatata", JONS 228, Summer 2016, pp.9-15. The design of the figures corresponds with coins found in groups F - J. One of many post Gupta states, the issuance of gold coinages from the Samatata Kingdom follow the general type of the Gupta Coins issued before them, but are different in purity, clarity and weight. This kingdom was located in mostly in what is today Bengal, succeeding the Gupta power base in the region. This coin is listed as an anonymous Issue due to the lack of a full legend on found coins indicating the specific king.
