Context
Menander I was King of the Baktrian Kingdom and Indo-Greek Kingdom from 160-135 BC. A convert to Greco-Buddhism, he did much to support Buddhist causes and art forms. He is best known as a conqueror, and likely started his reign by conquering Taxila to take the Baktrian throne, following which he also assumed the Indo-Greek Throne and conquered large areas of modern India and Afghanistan, with attestations to his conquest of “more tribes than Alexander” and some historians believing he conquered as far as Pataliputra. According to Plutarch, he dies in camp and had his remains interned in stupas across his realm, while Buddhist sources state he retired and die peacefully.
