Context
This coin was struck anonymously, since the local Dhar ruler is not named. However they were stuck in the name of Shah Alam II. Most of the coins show Hanuman running right, and less often show the monkey-god running left. Weights are centered on a c. 13 grams Falus standard, but samples vary from 12,07 to 13,70 grams. Diameters vary from 20,76 to 25,5 grams. The reference catalog is Dr. S.K.Bhatt: The Coinage of the Native States of Central India: Jhabua - Ratlam - Dhar, edited by the Academy of Indian Numismatics and Sigillography, Indore, 2003. There are similar Hanuman coins struck in the neighboring states of Sailana and Ratlam, indicating the importance of the figure of the monkey-god in the local culture of the region.
